The Problem – variability
of quality and high cost of imaging at a trial site |
|
|
There is one
area of clinical trials that is often overlooked – the actual taking of the
patient images. Even though it is well recognized that the investigator has
no control over the imaging department in his institution and that different
technologists on the same machine may generate different quality, it is still
assumed that the investigators will be able to generate imaging that is
compatible with the protocol. Often the local radiologist does not even know
that there is a trial patient on his scanner, the radiologist has had no
training or extra time for the trial and it is the investigator (not the
radiologist) who is being paid by the trial sponsor. Furthermore the local
radiology technologist changes every shift and they may have no knowledge of
the trial. |

The Solution –
controlling image acquisition sites saves cost while enhancing quality |
|
Quality - Pharmascan controls the actual
image acquisition by obtaining time blocks on scanners throughout the
country. By pooling multiple trials, Pharmascan creates ongoing relationships
with a national network of radiologists and technologists who are aware of the
specific needs of trials and are only paid if the exam is performed
correctly. |

|
Cost - By consolidating purchase of
scanner time over the entire country (and beyond) and factoring local
scheduling, Pharmascan is able to negotiate cheaper rates (similar to
consolidators in the airline industry) while improving quality. |
