Imagine that the line drawing above was the tracing of a tumor, 3 months apart in the same patient after treatment. Clearly, the tumor has shrunk between the original time point (left) and the three months point (right) but if the protocol asks for measurements of the greatest dimensions, the result would be stable disease. That may end the trial of a drug.
